MICROMV cassettes are about 1/3 the size of a MiniDV cassettes yet their picture quality is about the same. MICROMV achieves this with the use of more efficient MPEG2 compression. MPEG2 is similar to the encoding used for DVD video. Another similarity with DVD video discs is the utilization of true component video recording, for sharper and more accurate colors. MICROMV also records MPEG2 digital stereo sound.
All MICRO MV cassettes have a built-in 64K memory chip which is used to capture index pictures, index titling information and remaining cassette recording capacity.
